The good news is that your session does not have to feel stressful. With the right prep and the right mindset, it can actually be a really fun experience for everyone.

Over the years, I’ve learned what helps parents not just survive their family photo session, but truly enjoy it. Here’s how to get ready in a way that helps you create beautiful memories, capture real connection, and actually enjoy the experience:
1. Start With the Right Mindset
It’s completely normal to want at least one photo where everyone is looking and smiling. But the magic often happens in the in-between moments. Let go of the idea that your kids need to pose perfectly. I’ll guide them gently, keep things light, and work with their personalities. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s connection.
If your little one doesn’t want to smile or sit still, please don’t worry. I have lots of tricks to keep things moving and positive. Your only job is to relax, stay present, and enjoy time with your family.
2. Plan Your Outfits Ahead of Time
Coordinated doesn’t mean matching. I suggest choosing two or three complementary colors and building from there. Soft neutrals, earth tones, and pastels photograph beautifully. Try to avoid bold logos, neon colors, and anything that is uncomfortable.

When it comes to kids, comfort is everything. If they feel good in what they are wearing, they are much more likely to stay happy and engaged.
3. Prep the Kids Without the Pressure
Let your kids know that we’re going on a little adventure together. Tell them we’ll be playing games, exploring, and having fun. You can bring a few small, no-mess snacks and water, along with a favorite toy if it helps them feel more relaxed.
Try not to stress if they are extra wiggly or need breaks. I follow their pace and adjust as needed. Some of the best photos happen when kids are being themselves.
4. Trust the Process
Family sessions are about more than just getting one perfect photo. They are about capturing your real-life connection. The more you focus on being present with your family, the more natural and meaningful the images will be.
